The Rolex Air-King 116900, introduced in 2016, revitalised the historic Air-King line that first appeared in 1945. Initially part of the "Air" series in honour of British RAF pilots, it became an autonomous collection in 1958. Although abandoned in 2014, the Air-King returned with a new design and advanced features.

The Air-King, one of Rolex's oldest models, has always been very important. Initially launched in honour of RAF drivers during World War II, it then became Rolex's entry-level timepiece and acquired a dedicated clientele. Its rebirth in 2016 at Baselworld reintroduced it as an affordable aviation-inspired watch, distinguishing itself within the Rolex range.

The 116900 model has a 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case, which represents a significant increase over the original 34 mm case, and gives it a sporty and modern look. This case includes a Twinlock screw-on crown, providing water resistance up to 100 metres, and an Oyster strap with the 5 mm Easylink extension system for better comfort. The dial design of the new Air-King, inspired by the instruments of the Bloodhound SSC, contrasts with the earlier, simpler designs. It has a black background, 3-6-9 numbers in white gold, a light triangle at 12 o'clock, white markers for minutes and a green hand for seconds, as well as a green and yellow Rolex logo.

In terms of technology, the 116900 includes an internal shield from the Milgauss, protecting its movement from the magnetic fields. It is powered by the 3131 calibre with a blue Parachrom spiral, offering a power reserve of 48 hours and a COSC certified accuracy of +2/-2 seconds per day.

This modern iteration of the Air-King combines Rolex's rich history with contemporary design and cutting-edge technology, making it a unique and important piece of the collection.
